Things to do in and around Manuel Antonio National Park

3 min read

Manuel Antonio is one of the most visited destinations in Costa Rica. It’s easy to reach, relatively compact, and offers a delightful mix of stunning beaches and lush jungle. Quepos, the charming city adjacent to the national park, boasts a wide variety of guided activities and vibrant nightlife that cater to a diverse range of travelers.

That said, it can get quite busy. Planning ahead, especially during peak season, is essential to ensure you can secure reservations before they fill up. With this understanding, you’ll find it easier to embrace what the area does so well: a fantastic variety of activities within a small, convenient footprint.

Here’s a breakdown of what we recommend doing while you’re there. However, this only touches the surface as there are many tours and events that we have yet to experience, such as ziplining, whale watching, sport fishing, and more.

Visit Manuel Antonio National Park

This is the main attraction in the area. The park features short jungle trails alongside a few well-known beaches. You can explore the main routes in just a few hours, stopping at scenic viewpoints and beach access points along the way. A good variety of wildlife, including monkeys and sloths, calls the park home, though sightings can depend on timing and crowds.

If your goal is to see wildlife, visiting the park early and considering a guide is a great idea. Guides typically carry spotting scopes, enhancing your viewing experience. If you prefer a mix of light hiking and beach time, you can certainly explore on your own.

Spend Time on the Beaches

The beaches inside the park are pristine, swimmable, and easily accessible once you’re inside. There are also numerous fantastic beach options outside the park. In Costa Rica, it’s hard to find a bad beach, but do keep in mind that many beaches on the Pacific side have frequent riptides. Most beaches display signage indicating the risk levels, so just be aware and respectful of the ocean and you’ll find countless wonderful beach experiences waiting for you.

Visit Rainmaker Conservation Park

If you’re looking for an experience that truly immerses you in nature, consider a visit to Rainmaker. Located about a 30-minute drive from Quepos, it offers a different kind of adventure with more forest, fewer crowds, and a series of hanging bridges that take you through the lush canopy. You’ll also discover beautiful waterfalls and natural swimming spots along the trails.

Take the Villa Vanilla Spice Tour

This is one of the more unique experiences in the area and a refreshing break from the beaches and hiking. The tour guides you through a working farm where you’ll learn how spices like vanilla, cardamom, clove, cacao, cinnamon, and black pepper are grown and processed. It’s highly informative, and you’ll leave with a deeper understanding of these essential crops, which many people only know as products on grocery store shelves.

Get Out on the Water with Jetski Tour Manuel Antonio

If you’re seeking a bit more adventure, a jet ski tour provides an exhilarating change of pace. These tours take you along the stunning coastline, offering a different perspective of the area. Depending on conditions, it’s possible to see dolphins or other marine life, but like most wildlife experiences here, it’s not guaranteed. If you’re looking to break up slower activities like hiking and beach time, this is a good way to do it.

ATV Tours

There are several ATV tours available in the area, but we particularly enjoyed this one. You’ll ride through the expansive palm fields that characterize the region north of Quepos, and the route takes you up into the mountains, where you’ll be rewarded with breathtaking views overlooking the coastline. The turnaround point is at a private waterfall and swimming hole, making this a wonderful option for a refreshing adventure away from the heat.

Final Thoughts

Manuel Antonio shines when you embrace it as a convenient, all-in-one destination rather than a remote wilderness experience. You can see wildlife, enjoy beach time, and partake in a plethora of tours and events. There’s more than enough to fill several days without feeling repetitive. As long as you’re not seeking isolation, this is a fantastic location to experience a rich variety of what Costa Rica has to offer in a wonderfully efficient and easy-to-navigate way, which is why so many people find themselves drawn to this vibrant area.
