For High Thrills in Monteverde's Cloud Forest, Visit Treetopia: the Home of Some of Costa Rica's Best Hanging Bridges

Monteverde is one of our favorite destinations in Costa Rica. Nestled in the southern end of the Tilarán mountain range, this area offers a quintessential Costa Rican cloud forest experience. Cool and misty weather, quaint mountain towns, incredible restaurants, authentic wildlife experiences, agricultural tours, stunning views, and tons of adventure experiences all come together in one place. We like to say that the only thing Monteverde is missing is a beach.

Sound like a lot? It is. We’ve visited Monteverde several times and still haven’t experienced everything the area has to offer. For anyone who wants to experience a lot of Costa Rica in one place, Monteverde is a great option. For those who want to experience Monteverde with a bit of adventure, we recommend planning a day at Treetopia.

What is Treetopia?

Formerly known as Sky Adventures Monteverde, Treetopia has been in operation for about 30 years. The company rebranded in 2023, and the name wasn’t the only notable change. Substantial renovations to the adventure infrastructure and the welcome center were completed, giving the facilities a fresh and modern feel.

The park has four different experiences: the Skywalk Hanging Bridges, a TreeTram cableway, Sky Trek ziplining, and the Arboreal Challenge Course. Across these four activities is the right combination of adrenaline and activity for everyone. Travelers could pick the activity that’s right for them for a half-day experience, or they could do a full day at Treetopia and enjoy multiple experiences. The onsite restaurant is especially practical for anyone planning a full day of adventure at Treetopia, but is also a great way to finish a half-day adventure and is helpful for keeping flexibility in your plan for the day.

The Skywalk Hanging Bridges – low adrenaline, moderate activity

The hanging bridge experience traverses 1.7 miles of cloud forest and 6 total bridges. The path is a mixture of pavement and hard-packed gravel with no stairs/steps and moderate elevation change (especially for Costa Rica). It is an easy hike, especially if you take your time.

Many hanging bridge parks will have alternate routes that bypass the bridges in the event people aren’t comfortable crossing the bridges. That isn’t the case here. The only way to continue on the path is to cross the bridges. There is only one bridge that is optional, and that’s because it is the newest bridge that lies on an optional trail loop. This is the final bridge on the trail, the glass bridge.

The glass bridge is a standard suspension bridge with the exception of its floor. Instead of the typical treads, the floor is composed entirely of glass panels allowing you to see all the way to the forest floor. At a length of 138 feet, it rises 65 feet above the forest floor. Unlike the other bridges in the park, this one does not rise above the canopy. For people who may be afraid of heights, this helps make the bridge less intimidating as you don’t feel like you are standing on top of something. Instead, you feel a bit more enclosed by the foliage around you. And after having walked the other bridges at greater heights, this one will be a cakewalk.

The hanging bridges at Treetopia are probably our favorite in Costa Rica. They are impressively long, very stable, and place you right at canopy level instead of below it. The longest bridge stretches a whopping 774 feet, and the highest bridge reaches 164 feet above the forest floor. While the views are picturesque, we found the experience to be focused on the bridges themselves, not necessarily the wildlife and geography.

While it is possible to see a plethora of wildlife here, there are other places that offer greater chances of spotting more creatures. As with any nature experience, results vary greatly and animal sightings are never guaranteed. Animals move when and where they want, and every visit is different. That said, the forest is home to many of the species that make Monteverde famous, including monkeys, sloths, coatis, toucans, hummingbirds, and hundreds of bird species. If you want to try and use this opportunity to observe wildlife, we recommend booking a hike as early in the day as possible. There are also guided tours available that will help you maximize your wildlife experience as these guides are remarkably skilled at spotting well-camouflaged animals that most visitors would walk right past. Even if you don't encounter much wildlife, the forest itself is the attraction. The cloud forest is one of the rarest ecosystems on Earth, and simply walking through it is an unforgettable experience.

Sky Trek Zipline – high adrenaline, low activity

The course includes seven ziplines stretching across 1.9 miles of valleys and canopies, the longest spanning a 2460 foot length. Riders will reach a maximum elevation of 328 feet. One feature that many first-time zipliners appreciate is Treetopia's automatic braking system. Unlike some traditional zipline courses, riders don't need to manually control their speed, allowing them to focus on the scenery and experience instead. If you want an experience with a high adrenaline to effort ratio, this is the tour for you.

TreeTram Cableway – low adrenaline, low activity

The TreeTram is an open-air gondola that gently carries visitors above the forest canopy to one of the mountain peaks. At the top, there is an optional short hiking trail and a small café. Visibility can be reduced due to the typical cloud forest misty weather conditions, but this is all part of the cloud forest experience. Of the four activities, this undoubtedly offers the best views of the area. The TreeTram can be experienced as a single adventure or as part of the ziplining tour.

Arboreal Challenge Course – high adrenaline, moderate activity

The aerial obstacle course is designed for travelers who enjoy ropes courses and adventure parks more than traditional nature walks. This aerial obstacle course features various obstacles including a 656 foot zipline bicycle ride ~100 feet above the ground, tree climbs, rope bridges, and a tarzan swing. This is a really unique way to experience the cloud forest and, for most people, will probably be the most adventurous opportunity.

Final Thoughts

One of the strengths of Treetopia is that it doesn't force visitors into a single type of experience. Each tour will offer a great and different way to enjoy the cloud forest and make unforgettable memories.

Treetopia is a bit more expensive than similar attractions in other parts of Costa Rica, but we think it’s a case of getting what you pay for. When it comes to trip planning, we like to take a wholistic approach. The Monteverde area generally has more affordable options for lodging than other locations, so there are ways that you can offset these higher ticket prices to make a Treetopia experience fit into any trip budget.

Finally, don't forget that you're visiting a cloud forest. Weather changes quickly, so pack a lightweight rain jacket, wear closed-toe hiking shoes with good traction, and have a plan for protecting your phone or camera from rain and mist.
