Costa Rica is a paradise for nature lovers and adventure seekers. With its stunning landscapes, diverse wildlife, and rich culture, this Central American gem offers something for everyone. 1. La Fortuna: Arenal Volcano National Park and Mistico Hanging Bridges
Arenal Volcano stands as one of Costa Rica's most renowned landmarks. This active volcano dominates the landscape, encircled by verdant rainforests. Visitors have the opportunity to hike along trails that offer breathtaking viewpoints, showcasing the volcano and the picturesque Arenal Lake. In the vicinity, you'll find the Mistico hanging bridges, La Fortuna waterfall, and numerous coffee experiences. This area is ideal for adventure enthusiasts, food lovers, nature aficionados, and families.
The park is also home to diverse wildlife, including monkeys, sloths, and various bird species. After a day of hiking, you can relax in the natural hot springs nearby, which are heated by the volcano itself.

In just one hour at this park, we've observed a greater number and variety of animals than in all the other parks in Costa Rica combined. This park is definitely a family favorite, offering everything we could want. Mistico schedules its tours to ensure there aren't too many people on a trail at once, and the trails are fairly easy to navigate. Even though I get scared at heights above 15 feet, I was able to enjoy these views thanks to the breathtaking scenery. We highly recommend the guided tour for its valuable local insights.
2. Monteverde: Cloud Forest Reserve and Galeria Colibri
The Monteverde Cloud Forest Reserve is a must-visit for anyone who loves nature. This unique ecosystem is home to a variety of plant and animal species, many of which are not found anywhere else in the world. Visitors can explore the reserve through a network of trails and hanging bridges that offer breathtaking views of the forest canopy. Don't forget to look out for the famous resplendent quetzal, a colorful bird that is a highlight for many birdwatchers.

If you're committed to spotting some of the world's most stunning birds, this is the place for you. It's not unusual to encounter quetzals, motmots, and the three-wattled bellbird here. For those who aren't passionate bird watchers, there's still something to enjoy. As soon as you step off the transportation at the Monte Verde Cloud Forest Preserve, turn around, walk 50 feet, and you'll come across the Galeria Colibri. Here, you'll see dozens of hummingbirds buzzing around feeders and can grab a cup of coffee for your own energy boost.
3. Playa Flamingo
Playa Flamingo is a breathtaking beach located on the Pacific coast, renowned for its pristine white sands and crystal-clear waters. This stunning destination offers a perfect blend of relaxation and adventure, making it a must-visit spot for beach lovers.
Visitors to Playa Flamingo can enjoy a range of activities, including swimming, sunbathing, and beginner surfing in the short, shallow waves. This spot is less crowded than the Tamarindo area but provides similar amenities. It's an ideal stop for those flying into or out of Liberia.
We don't typically plan adventures at the beach so I have no event recommendations. Catch some waves and enjoy the sunshine here for the perfect day of relaxation.
4. Manzanillo: Manzanillo Beach and Yicel Shipwreck
Manzanillo is renowned for its stunning biodiversity and lush landscapes. The park features beautiful beaches and vibrant coral reefs, making it a fantastic destination for snorkeling and exploring marine life. Visitors can walk the beach and encounter a variety of wildlife, including monkeys, sloths, and numerous bird species. Note that while the beach is a fantastic place to visit is is not recommended to tour the Gandoca-Manzanillo Preserve without a guide due an increase in robberies on the trail. For trail hiking, we recommend Cahuita National Park.
Along this beach you'll find the Yicel Shipwreck and there is a fantastic Jaguar Rescue Center just down the road. We stayed a local AirBnb and thoroughly enjoyed the area. While beach parties started early, the were lively and respectful, while largely completely quietened down by 10:30, even on the weekends.
5. Alajuela: Rescate- ZooAve
Located in Alajuela, Costa Rica, the Rescate Wildlife Center is committed to rescuing, rehabilitating, and releasing injured or orphaned wildlife. The center aims to offer a safe refuge for various species, including mammals, birds, and reptiles, impacted by habitat destruction, poaching, or illegal wildlife trade.
At the Rescate Wildlife Center, visitors can participate in guided tours to learn about the different species residing there and the ongoing conservation efforts. This experience offers insights into the challenges faced by wildlife in Costa Rica and highlights the importance of preserving biodiversity. It's an ideal destination for those who need to catch flights out of San Jose but prefer not to risk the drive from their final stop. Planning a visit to Alajuela on the first or last day, with a stop at the Rescate, is highly recommended.
