Traveling to Costa Rica is not just a trip; it’s an adventure filled with excitement from the moment you land. Choosing the right airport can set a positive tone for your entire journey. While Liberia is a choice for many, flying into San Jose offers distinct advantages that can truly enhance your experience. In this post, we will delve into why San Jose is the best option for your Costa Rican adventure, with a focus on the stunning coastal destinations accessible from the capital.
Many travelers to Costa Rica underestimate the time needed for immigration lines. The sun rises and sets at 5:30 AM and 5:30 PM daily. If you arrive around noon, after an hour for immigration, you have 4.5 hours to reach your destination without breaks. Adding a stop for dinner or sightseeing reduces travel time to under 3.5 hours on unfamiliar roads, not including traffic. It's easier to plan to stay in the Central Valley on the day of arrival and start your adventures early the next day.
This applies to departure as well. I would never suggest returning from any destination on the day you leave. It's advisable to return to the Central Valley at least half a day before flying out of San Jose. However, this doesn't mean the adventure ends! There are many exciting attractions nearby, like Volcan Poas, The Children's Museum, Feria Verde (on Saturday mornings), and Rescate Zoo Ave. Let's dive into those details a little bit below.
The Gateway to Costa Rica
San Jose, the capital of Costa Rica, hosts the main international airport and serves as an excellent starting point for travelers. Its central location provides easy access to various areas, including the Southern Pacific, Northern Pacific, and Caribbean coasts, offering you the flexibility to explore a wide range of attractions. Most travelers arrive in San Jose, go through immigration, and then must decide whether to drive to their destination before sunset or lose half a day of travel. However, there's a third option: stay local. Finding accommodations in Alajuela, La Garita, or Escazu keeps you near attractions while ensuring safety in an unfamiliar city.
Visit the Rescate Wildlife Rescue Center to learn about conservation efforts for Costa Rica's native wildlife. This center focuses on rehabilitating injured animals and provides an educational experience for visitors. It's a fantastic way to appreciate the local fauna while supporting a worthy cause.
If you're traveling with family, be sure to visit the Children's Museum in San José. This interactive museum is designed for children of all ages and offers hands-on exhibits that make learning enjoyable. It's an excellent way to engage younger members of your group while enjoying a unique cultural experience. Be cautious, as this area of San Jose can be a bit risky.
Another option is Volcan Poas, just north of San Jose. This majestic volcano is one of Costa Rica's most accessible and popular attractions, drawing visitors from around the world who are eager to witness its stunning natural beauty and unique geological features. Volcan Poas is renowned for its large crater, which is one of the largest active craters in the world, measuring approximately 1.5 kilometers in diameter. The crater is filled with a turquoise sulfuric lake, whose vibrant color is due to the high concentration of minerals and gases released from the volcanic activity beneath the surface.
Exploring the Southern Pacific Coast
One of the most popular routes from San Jose leads to the Southern Pacific coast. Known for its breathtaking beaches and diverse wildlife, this part of Costa Rica has much to offer. Manuel Antonio and Dominical are just a few hours’ drive from the capital.
Manuel Antonio National Park is a must-visit destination, boasting pristine beaches, hiking trails, and a chance to see fascinating wildlife such as monkeys and sloths. The park is home to over 350 species of animals. Furthermore, Manuel Antonio's beaches, with their warm waters, are perfect for both relaxation and water activities like surfing and paddleboarding.
Recommended beach for families: Playa Biesanz. You can park adjacent to the walking path and grab umbrellas at the beach. Parking will cost minimally, and while not "official," we recommend it for ease. This is a good point to mention that there are many unofficial parking plays in Costa Rica. If you're coming from another region where random people standing in bright vests helping you park feels sketchy, be at ease; it's normal here. Tip the parking advisors or lot owners (said extremely loosely) and you'll be fine. Just remember to not pack any valuables for a beach trip.
Recommended event: Jetskiing in Quepos. While our particular day had larger waves than normal, the guides were extremely gracious and a ton of fun!
Discovering the Northern Pacific Coast
For a different atmosphere, explore the Northern Pacific coast. This area is renowned for its breathtaking beaches, such as Tamarindo and Playa Conchal, famous for their golden sands and superb surfing conditions.
Tamarindo is a lively beach town celebrated for its nightlife and social atmosphere, drawing visitors with a range of restaurants, bars, and shops. In contrast, Playa Conchal is known for its distinctive shell-covered shores and tranquil, crystal-clear waters perfect for snorkeling. Studies indicate that the regions near Playa Conchal boast a rich biodiversity of marine life, with over 100 fish species that snorkelers often encounter.
Be mindful that it is not only illegal but also a significant cultural faux pas to remove any natural elements in Costa Rica. This includes taking shells, bones, rocks, plant matter—essentially anything except trash. Never take shells from the beach.
In full transparency, we typically avoid these beaches because they aren't our personal family preference. We tend to seek out places with high local density or cultural impact, but if you're looking for a fantastic day at the beach with all of the amenities, look no further. If you're like us, we recommend Playas Flamingo, Brasilito, or Potrero nearby.
The Allure of the Caribbean Coast (El Caribe)
If you're looking for a relaxed atmosphere, the Caribbean coast is an ideal getaway. Easily reachable from San Jose, places like Puerto Viejo and Cahuita boast stunning beaches and a rich culture.
Puerto Viejo is famous for its reggae music scene and lively nightlife, alongside beautiful beaches such as Playa Cocles, Playa Chiquita, and Punta Uva. These beaches are often less crowded, offering a more laid-back vibe. Meanwhile, Cahuita National Park provides fantastic opportunities for hiking and wildlife observation, safeguarding over 600 plant species and various exotic animals, including sloths and coral reefs.
It's important to keep in mind that Cahuita and Manzanillo National Parks, known for their stunning natural beauty, have visitor regulations in place, particularly in Cahuita. These regulations prohibit items like plastic bags, bottles, and snorkeling gear. If you're organizing a family trip to these parks, make sure to review the rules before packing. Additionally, it's advisable not to visit Gandoca Manzanillo National Park without a guide for safety reasons.

A significant perk of flying into San Jose is the scenic drive to your chosen destination. Book Early: Flights to San Jose can fill up fast, especially during high season. Booking in advance can help you snag the best rates. Pay close attention to Costa Rican holidays to know when travel destinations will be full.
Transportation: Renting a car offers the freedom to explore at leisure, but familiarize yourself with local driving laws and conditions to stay safe. Notably, rental costs will appear to be low online, but additional travel insurance is required by most agencies in Costa Rica and will likely double the online quote when checking out at pick-up. They are aware that your credit card or [insert other entity] provides coverage for your trip, and, no, they will not make an exception.
Pack Smart: Costa Rica's climate varies by region, so bring layers that accommodate warm beach days and cool mountain evenings. Quick dry items will be the way to go for most events. Rain is the culture in Costa Rica, so don't plan on avoiding it-experience it.
Respect Nature: Costa Rica is known for its rich biodiversity. Be mindful of your environmental footprint and follow local guidelines to protect the natural beauty of the country.
